Skybound Crowned Champions of the Inaugural Playground Youth Cup
The inaugural Playground Youth Cup has officially come to a close, with Skybound making history as the competition’s first-ever champions.
After several weeks of competitive youth basketball at Playground Sen Sok Basketball Center, Skybound completed an unbeaten campaign, finishing 4–0 and capping off their remarkable run with a 53–41 victory over Phantom in the championship game on Sunday.
A New Competition for Phnom Penh Youth Basketball
The August Youth Cup was introduced as a new opportunity for young players in Phnom Penh to experience regular competitive basketball in a structured tournament environment.
Four teams — Skybound, Phantom, Alter Eagle and CJBC Mamba — took part in the inaugural season, producing eight games of competitive basketball throughout August and into the championship weekend.
From the opening round, it was clear that Skybound would be a team to watch.
Skybound’s Perfect Run
Skybound opened their campaign with an impressive 57–23 win over Alter Eagle, immediately establishing themselves as one of the tournament favourites.
They followed that performance with a 32–25 victory over CJBC Mamba, before surviving a much closer contest against Phantom, winning 44–41.
That set up a championship showdown with Phantom on September 6.
In the final game of the inaugural Youth Cup, Skybound once again came out on top, defeating Phantom 53–41 to finish the competition undefeated.
Four games. Four wins. One championship.
A Competitive First Season
While Skybound ultimately claimed the trophy, the inaugural Youth Cup produced plenty of competitive basketball across the four participating teams.
Phantom finished with a 1–2–1 record, including a thrilling 33–33 draw against Alter Eagle and a narrow three-point loss to Skybound.
Alter Eagle recorded two victories during the competition, including a 31–26 win over CJBC Mamba, while CJBC Mamba continued to compete throughout the season despite finishing without a win.
The games provided players with valuable experience competing against different teams and playing meaningful games in front of their teammates, families and supporters.
Building Something Bigger
The inaugural season represents the beginning of what Playground hopes will become a regular fixture on the Phnom Penh youth basketball calendar.
The Youth Cup is designed to give players more opportunities to play, compete, develop and build friendships through basketball, while creating a pathway for teams to return each month and challenge for another championship.
With the August season now complete, attention turns to the next Youth Cup September competition — where Skybound will have a target on their backs.
